Tsirigos Honored with Big Ten Medal of Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten, the nation's oldest collegiate conference, commemorates the 102^nd anniversary of a very unique tradition - the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference's most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who had "attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work." Big Ten schools currently feature almost 9,500 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In the 101 years of the Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 student-athletes have earned this distinction.

The women's honoree this year is CaraMia Tsirigos (Softball) and the men's honoree Derek Creviston (Men's Soccer).

As Indiana's designated player, Tsirigos leads the team in home runs with eight this season and has knocked 25 home runs in her career, which is tied for fifth all-time at Indiana. She is currently batting .305, a career best for the senior. Her 111 career walks is tied for second all-time in program history. Tsirigos has played in 184 games in a Hoosier uniform, with 174 starts.

Off the field, Tsirigos is an Executive Board Member for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which works to act as a liaison between athletes and the athletic department. She has also been greatly involved in the Hoosier Heroes Leadership and Emerging Leaders programs. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, she was also named a 2016 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Tsirigos will graduate with a major in Sport Marketing and Management and a minor in the Kelley School of Business.
