BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosier track and field team will split up in three sections to compete in three different meets this weekend. A group of 20 athletes, mostly from the distance group, will head east to compete in the Penn Relays. Heading south for the Longhorn Invitational will be 12 field athletes. Finally, the sprints group will head just down the road to compete in the RedHawk Invitational.
IU has had great success in the past at the Penn Relays, and will look to continue that trend this weekend. Six athletes will compete in individual events before the weekend relays take off. Freshman William Session will run in the 110m hurdles, and he will represent the lone sprinting event with Hoosier representation. Haley Harris and Jeremy Coughler will both run in the steeplechase, while Maggie Allen will run in the 3k and the duo of Mark Chandler and Bryce Millar will compete in the 5k.
Head coach Ron Helmer will also be sending six relay teams to the starting line over the weekend. The women's DMR will be contested on Thursday evening. IU will be represented by Brenna Calder, Taylor Williams, Olivia Hippensteel and Katherine Receveur, the same group that competed at the Indoor National Championships this season. Saturday's action will be highlighted by the men's 4xMile relay. The team of Jason Crist, Kyle Mau, Matt Schwartzer and Joe Murphy will attempt to win IU's fifth men's 4xMile relay championship at the Penn Relays.
The Longhorn Invitational will get started on Friday afternoon with the men's hammer throw. Andrew Miller will look to continue his excellent junior season in the event. Nakel McClinton will be the lone Hoosier in the women's hammer throw later that evening.
Saturday's slate is packed with Indiana's best field athletes going toe-to-toe with some of the nation's best. Sydney Clute, who enters the weekend with the second best pole vault clearance in the nation, will vault at 3:00 p.m. EST. On the men's side, three Hoosiers will compete in the three jumping events: Eric Bethea (long jump and triple jump), Treyton Harris (long jump) and Paul Galas (high jump). Three jumpers will compete in the women's long jump: Ari Nelson, Aaliyah Armstead and Jenna Jungels.
The throwing events on Saturday will include Willie Morrison and David Schall in both the discus and the shot put. Khayla Dawson will compete in both throws on the women's side, while McClinton will throw the discus.
The group headed to Oxford, Ohio will compete in a handful of individual sprinting events. The meet will start and conclude on Saturday afternoon. IU will compete in a total of 10 events.
