BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced Wednesday their selections to the 2017 All-CWPA teams. The Indiana Hoosiers secured two spots on this year's squad, with junior Kelly Matthews earning a first team selection and freshman Mollie Williams landing on the second team.
Matthews strikes her second selection to the All-CWPA first team and her third spot on the All-Conference teams with this year's honor. The junior led Indiana with 51 goals this season, sliding her career total to 197 (6th – IU history) in three seasons. She also added 25, assists, 29 steals, and a team-leading 10 field blocks.
After opening her goal account in IU's upset win over No. 8 Hawaii (1/22), Matthews uncorked a 21-game streak with at least one goal to her name. The Roxboro, Quebec native registered hat tricks in seven games this year, tying a single-game record with 7 goals against Iona (3/4).
The first team distinction is Matthew's 10th career honor from the CWPA. She has two additional regular season All-Conference Honors (2nd in 2015; 1st in 2016); two first team selections to the All-CWPA Tournament Team (2015, 2016); three CWPA Rookie of the Week awards in 2015; and both Rookie of the Year awards for the 2015 regular season and ensuing CWPA Championships.
Williams joined the Hoosiers at the semester break and shot out of a cannon for a blistering freshman year. She led a potent freshman class with 37 goals and six hat tricks, adding 21 assists and 33 steals to the season effort. She led Indiana with 25 drawn exclusions and trailed only Matthews with 8 field blocks.
As the regular season reached its final stretch, Williams slipped into a goal-scoring groove. She finished 16 of her goals in the Hoosiers' last two weekends, marking season highs of 4 goals apiece against Princeton (4/8) and George Washington (4/9). Williams recorded at least one goal or one assist in 23-of-27 games this year.
The Hoosiers embark on their three-day run through the CWPA Championships in two days. The action begins at home on Friday, April 28 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center with Indiana taking on No. 20 Harvard at 4:30 p.m. ET.
