PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The 123rd running of the Penn Relays started out with a bang for the Indiana University track and field team. The first event with Hoosier representation saw the women's distance medley relay (DMR) team take down the school record.
The women's DMR team, did not just take down the school record, they shattered the previous mark. The team was able to get off to an excellent start with a great 1,200m leg from Brenna Calder. The junior's split of 3:24.01 was the fourth quickest in the event. Taylor Williams grabbed the baton from Calder and sprinted around the track in a time of 54.82. The 800m leg was handled by Olivia Hippensteel. The senior split the second fastest 800m time of the race, clocking in at 2:07.21 before giving way to Katherine Receveur. The sophomore All-American handled the anchor leg of the relay. Her mile split of 4:36.98 netted the Hoosiers a fourth place finish and a time that bested the previous school record by 14 seconds.
In the individual distance events, Indiana saw similar success. Jeremy Coughler continued IU's proud tradition of steeplechasers at the Penn Relays. Jeremy was the runner-up finisher, crossing the line with a time of 8:50.48. He registered the fastest time by a collegiate runner, giving the Hoosiers three steeplechase individual winners in the last six years, including last season.
Maggie Allen was tremendous in a loaded 3,000m field. She finished third overall with a time of 9:26.29, a time that was good for the fourth best time in school history. In the women's steeplechase, Haley Harris crossed in 19th. Her time of 10:33.56 is the eighth fastest time in school history.
In the final event of the evening, Bryce Millar turned in a solid effort in the 5,000m run, notching a time of 14:02.98. His effort landed him a sixth place finish. Teammate Mark Chandler took 16th with a time of 14:18.81.
Day two from the Penn Relays will begin tomorrow at 1:20 p.m. with the women's 4x1,500m relay. The Longhorn Invitational will get started at 1:00 p.m. EST with the men's hammer throw.
