Hoosiers Down Iowa, 4-2 in Big Ten Tournament

URBANA, Ill. – The No. 10 seed Indiana women's tennis team advanced in the Big Ten Tournament with a 4-2 win against No. 7 seed Iowa on Thursday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers will now take on No. 2 seed Michigan in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. ET.
Caitlin Bernard and Pauline Jahren got the Hoosiers (14-13) going with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. The Hoosiers clinched the doubles point as Madison Appel and Kim Schmider picked up a 6-3 win to put the Hoosiers up 1-0 in the match.
After dropping her first set, Natalie Whalen came back to win the next two, 6-1, 6-0 to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead.
Iowa (16-9) responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 to tie the score, but Schmider put Indiana up 3-2 with a 6-3, 7-5 win on court six.
Madison Appel clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 7-5 win in the third set. Appel lost the first set 4-6, but came back to win 6-2, 7-5.
"I thought we showed a lot of fight and resiliency today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "We got off to a great start in doubles and didn't have quite the start we wanted in singles. The team kept with it and I'm really proud of them."
