Indiana Wins Dale England Cup

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Dale England Cup is returning to Bloomington for the first time since 2010 after 16th-ranked Indiana defeated No. 17 Duke, Notre Dame and San Diego on Saturday at Lake Lemon. The Hoosiers' 60 team points were ahead of Notre Dame (48), Duke (45) and San Diego (27), highlighted by the 1V8's victory in their heat.
After inclement weather canceled the races that were scheduled for Friday and then dealing with more delays early on Saturday, the four teams converged on the Dale England Rowing Facility for one session of racing.
The regatta began at 2:15 p.m. with the 1V8 race, where Indiana crossed the finish line in a time of 6:35.60, just over three seconds ahead of Notre Dame and nearly eight seconds ahead of San Diego with Duke finishing fourth.
The second race of the day – the 2V8 – was by far the closest of the day. With Indiana, Duke and Notre Dame breaking away from San Diego, all three boats approached the finish line at the same time time. When the dust settled, it was Duke taking first place by 24 one-hundredths of a second over Indiana and by two seconds over Notre Dame.
The final race of the day that counted towards the team score for the Dale England Cup, Duke once again crossed the finish line in first place. Notre Dame finished second followed by San Diego and Indiana. But despite the fourth place finish, the Hoosiers had accumulated enough points to win the Cup.
The racing continued after the three NCAA crews, with the 2V4, 3V4 and 3V8 competing. In the 2V4 heat, Duke won with a time of 8:01.3 and Notre Dame, San Diego and Indiana finishing behind them.
In the 3V8 heat, Indiana finished second with a time of 7:25.31 behind Notre Dame 'A' and ahead of Notre Dame 'B'.
Finishing out the day was the 3V4 heat that had to be shortened from 2,000 meters to 1,750 meters due to debris from the storms earlier in the day making its way onto the course near the finish. The race was close right through the end, but it would be Notre Dame narrowly edging out the Hoosiers by 2.75 seconds.
Indiana will join the other eight rowing programs in the Big Ten for the conference championship at the Indy Racing Club in Indianapolis on May 13-14.
