
IUWS Holds Annual Awards Banquet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer held its annual postseason awards banquet on Sunday at the Henke Hall of Champions. The event celebrated team and individual accomplishments from the 2016 season. Additionally, seniors Marissa Borschke, Ari Kowalski and Veronica Ellis were recognized for their dedication to the program.
The Hoosiers finished the 2016 campaign with a 7-9-4 mark and a 4-4-3 conference record. In addition, Indiana advanced to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2013. Borschke was named Third Team All-Big Ten while Macy Miller was selected to the All-Freshman Team, the first such recognitions for Indiana since 2013.
Off the field, IU saw 14 earn Academic All-Big Ten awards while celebrating the team's third straight Herbert Cup.
Below are the awards that were voted on by the team and handed out during Sunday's banquet.
Defensive MVP – Marissa Borschke (Redshirt Senior | Burlington, Ontario)
Borschke played every minute of the 2016 season, finishing her career tied at Indiana with 80 games played. Additionally, she is seventh all-time in games started with 75. Borschke was an anchor for the back, organizing the group to defend as a unit.
Offensive MVP – Mykayla Brown (Redshirt Sophomore | Indianapolis, Ind.)
Brown netted a career and team-best eight goals in 2016, with three of those being game-winners. The Indianapolis native scored four times in the final three games of the season while her four Big Ten goals was tied for fourth most in the conference. Brown put up two multi-goal performances and earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
Rookie of the Year – Allison Jorden (Freshman | Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Sarah L'Hommedieu (Freshman | Hudson, Ohio)
This year, the Hoosiers saw 12 put on the Indiana uniform for the first time this season and decided on two Rookie of the Year winners. Jorden started all 20 games and scored two goals, one in Indiana's 3-2 win against Wisconsin and the other in IU's 3-2 victory at Ohio State. L'Hommedieu twice earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades, as well as a Defensive Player of the Week nod. The goalkeeper posted four shutouts picked up a Big Ten-leading 93 saves, which was seventh most in the country amongst freshmen.
Most Improved Player – Kylie Kirk (Haddonfield, N.J. | Junior)
Kirk played in a career-high 19 games with 18 starts, another career best. She worked tirelessly to contribute as a centerback and sets a continual example of precise technical work. In addition, she netted her first career goal in Indiana's 3-2 win against Wisconsin. Kirk was tabbed as Indiana's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.
Unsung Hero – Veronica Ellis (Naperville, Ill. | Senior)
The Unsung Hero Award is given to the player whose contributions are not always noted in the box score or in the newspaper, but are key to the team's success. Ellis, who also won this award last season, started every game in 2016 and displayed her versatility across the field by continually leading by example and stepping up when needed most. This season she scored against SMU and twice assisted on goals. Ellis finished her IU career tied third all-time with 80 games played.
Coaches Award – Meghan Scott (London, Ontario | Freshman)
The Coaches Award is selected by the coaches and given to the player who continually puts the team above everything else to help Indiana succeed. Scott started all 20 games in the back and was a key component in the team's defensive accomplishments. In addition, she was second on the team in points as she collected seven assists, tied for seventh-most in a single season at Indiana. She picked up an assist in four of the last five games of the season. Her four assists in conference play is the second most in a single year at IU.
