BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team had a successful day at the Indy Collegiate Invitational on Saturday in Indianapolis. The team won six of eight sets as they played two sets each against Ohio, Southern Illinois, IUPUI and Pittsburgh.
"The Indy Collegiate Invite was a great format for us because we saw four different teams with different styles," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "We finished the day winning six of the eight sets but more importantly we saw things we want to continue to improve on throughout the rest of the spring training time."
The Hoosiers started the day by splitting two sets against Pittsburgh, 18-25, 25-20. Elizabeth Asdell had three kill on four swings and came up with two blocks. Meaghan Koors tallied four digs in the match.
In the next match, against IUPUI, the Hoosiers again split the sets, 25-18, 22-25. The middle blockers were big for Indiana as Hayden Huybers hit .778 with seven kills on nine swings and Deyshia Lofton posted six kills on eight swings with one error (.625 hitting percentage). Defensively, Samantha Fogg recorded nine digs.
After a lunch break the Hoosiers resumed play against Ohio and won both sets, 25-17, 25-21. Freshman outside hitter Ally Badowski tallied three kills on four swings and the Hoosiers as a team hit .346 with 28 kills and 10 errors on 52 attempts.
Indiana finished the day with two set wins against Southern Illinois, 25-23, 25-16. Kendall Beerman led the way for the Hoosiers in the match with six kills on 10 swings and hit .500. Meaghan Koors posted six digs and tallied two aces in the match.
For the tournament with all matches combined the Hoosiers hit .297 and had 29 aces compared to 34 errors. Huybers recorded 18 kills on 31 swings to hit .452 and Jessica Admire had 11 kills on 20 swings to hit .450. Badowski and Koors had six aces a piece and Samantha Fogg contributed five aces.
"Along with the improvements we want to make, we saw some really positive changes to our play with the transition of things from practice implemented into game play," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "Overall, I'm happy with our progress but not satisfied."
The Hoosiers will have their final spring competition at the Purdue Spring Invitational in West Lafayette on April 22.
