BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In preparation for Thursday's Cream & Crimson game, the Indiana football team took its Saturday practice to Memorial Stadium. The Hoosiers scrimmaged and are down to one more practice on Tuesday before Thursday night's 7 p.m. kickoff.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to get out there and allow us to finish well," Allen said. "We are getting near the end of spring ball. It's been a great spring for us and we are excited to get one last full padded practice in before we have our spring game."
This year, members of the IU coaching staff will be drafting the players they want on their spring game team.
"It's neat," Allen said. "I got this idea working with (Oregon) Coach (Willie) Taggart. Saw it work effectively and adopted it. What we have is two head coaches, Coach Hagen is head coach of the Crimson team and Coach DeBord is coach of the Cream team."
With the two coaches will be a divided up athletic department. The way it works is the coaches had four days to pick their two free agents, their top selections of who they want on their team - one on offense and one on defense. On Sunday, the two coaches will draft players in a four round, 12 picks per round style.
"I'm the commissioner, I'll be announcing the picks each time," Allen said. "Once they meet with their team, they have 60 seconds to make the next pick. It's a way for us to have fun with it, but we will have two complete teams that will play a game."
Thursday's spring game will give the team a chance to share what they've learned thus far with new coaches in front of an audience and full speed football.
"It's a new system, so the guys have had to learn new terminology," Allen said. "What I've been encouraged with is the way they've picked it up and the leadership of our guys. They've taken to our new staff and they've played with a lot of confidence."
The coaching staff knows time with the players is winding down before the academic year is over. The message for remaining practices is simple.
"Finish strong," Allen said. "That's what I talked to them in the meeting about - how we finish. The energy, the focus. We've had it every single day, don't stop now. The clocks ticking, sense of urgency from our guys. I want to see us, especially today, have a great high energy, high intensity practice. To me, the finish concept is going to be paramount to our guys these last three practices."
