BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second time in the past three years, Big Ten volleyball students from all 14 institutions will travel overseas to compete in a foreign tour. In addition to competition on the court, the tour will feature community service initiatives and the opportunity to experience new cultures. The Big Ten Volleyball Foreign Tour Team will travel to the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy and Austria from June 17-28, 2017.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Kendall Beerman will represent Indiana on the foreign tour.
"The Big Ten foreign tour is a first-class opportunity to showcase the best volleyball in the nation globally," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "I am excited for Kendall to represent Indiana on this trip. She has never toured Europe before and this trip will afford her the chance to compete with an unbelievable roster and to immerse herself in the cultures of the various countries they visit."
"I am looking to get the experience of a life time out of this tour," Beerman said. "I have never been to Europe, and it's something I have always been interested in doing. I love foreign volleyball and I have always been intrigued by culture in general, so I was ecstatic when I found out I was going to receive this amazing opportunity.
In addition to competition on the court, the 14 students in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in community service initiatives, study foreign languages with local students and visit some of Europe's most historic cities, including Vienna, Austria, Maribor, Slovenia, and Venice and Milan in Italy.
After redshirting her first year in Bloomington, Beerman was a big part of the Hoosiers success in the 2016 season. Beerman finished second among freshmen in the Big Ten in hitting percentage and fifth in the Big Ten among freshmen in kills. She became the first Hoosiers since 2014 to win a Big Ten weekly award when she won Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Oct. 31.
Maryland's Steve Aird will serve as the head coach of the Big Ten Volleyball Foreign Tour Team. Minnesota's Alexandra Dunphy will serve as the Director of Operations, Iowa's Cari Gold will be the Communications Director and Scott Campbell of Penn State serve as the Athletic Trainer. Jessica Palermo, Assistant Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference, will also travel with the party.
