BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference office announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Thursday and Indiana's Austin Foote (baseball) and Mollie Getzfread (field hockey) were named IU's two recipients.
Two students competing in intercollegiate athletics from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were each awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based on primarily academic achievements.
An Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2016, Foote has been a go-to lefty specialist out of the IU bullpen this season, as he has made 15 appearances, tied for the fourth most on the team. Allowing less than a hit an inning, Foote has also struck out 18 over 17 innings over work. He earned his first career save at Indiana State this season, which came in a stretch where he had four consecutive scoreless appearances in relief. The lefty did not allow a run in his first four appearances of the season as well, recording scoreless outings against Gonzaga, at Cincinnati, at Samford and at Hawaii.
Foote graduated last weekend with a degree in Finance from the distinguished Kelley School of Business. He plans on attending medical school in the next year for his postgraduate work.
Getzfread put the finishing touches on a five-year run with the Hoosiers, serving as captain in her last two seasons. Anchoring the defensive midfield alongside All-American Kate Barber, Getzfread didn't miss a start in the last three years of her career. Getzfread tallied 15 assists and one goal in the Hoosier uniform, dishing a career-high nine assists to lead the team last season. Getzfread garnered second team All-Big Ten honors in her final season after ending the regular season near the top of the conference's assist leaderboard.
In every year she was eligible for consideration, Getzfread received Academic All-Big Ten honors and selections to the NFHCA National Academic Squad for a total of nine academic accolades.
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
