Clute Captures Third Big Ten Pole Vault Title
5/12/2017 9:24:00 PM | Track and Field
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Sydney Clute confirmed her status as one of the most, if not the most, prolific pole vaulters in Big Ten history. She won her second consecutive outdoor pole vault Big Ten Championship, and third overall. She is the first athlete to win back-to-back Big Ten titles in the pole vault since Alicia Rue did it three straight years from 2008-10. An Indiana women's vaulter has taken home Big Ten gold in three of the last four Championships.
After passing on the opening two heights, Clute joined the competition at 4.03m (13-2.5). She easily cleared the bar on her first attempt. Sydney passed the next bar, re-entering the competition at 4.13m (13-6.5) and promptly cleared the bar on her first attempt. With just two jumpers remaining, Clute passed once again at 4.18m (13-8.5) before clearing 4.23m (13-10.5) on her first attempt. After the last competitor failed to clear the height, she passed again, moving the bar to 4.33m (14-2.5). The mark would provide her first miss of the afternoon. She would recover and clear the bar on her second attempt. The last height she cleared, 4.43m (14-6.25), broke the Big Ten Championships meet record and established the Penn State facility record.
In her first collegiate 10,000m run, Maggie Allen delivered the sixth fastest time in school history. After running most of the race in the middle of the pack, she spent the last 1,000 meters chasing down the leader. With two laps to go she climbed into second place and ended the race in third with a time of 33:56.37. Bryce Millar captured fourth place in the men's 10k to secure five points for the Hoosiers. For the entire second half of the race, Millar never fell outside of the top five. His time of 29:44.66 ranks ninth in school history.
Nakel McClinton started the scoring for the Hoosiers at the Big Ten Championships. She advanced to the finals of the hammer throw on the strength of her second throw. The throw traveled 59.98m (196-9) and placed her in second heading into the finals. She was unable to improve upon her mark in the finals but was able to secure six points and a third place finish.
On the men's side, Andrew Miller scored a point for the Hoosiers in the hammer throw. Like Nakel before him, his second throw of the afternoon was his best. He topped out with a throw of 62.49m (205-0), which was good for eighth.
A total of five IU runners made it back to the final of the 1,500m run. On the women's side, Katherine Receveur was the top qualifier with a time of 4:22.96. Brenna Calder will be seeded fifth in the final after recording a 4:23.30. Haley Harris was the last women's 1,500m runner to make the final with a time of 4:30.30. Kyle Mau was the third fastest men's runner with a time of 4:44.22, claiming one of the automatic qualifying spots for the final. Joe Murphy captured the fourth spot and secured his spot in Sunday's final with a time of 3:44.39.
A pair of Hoosiers advanced to the finals in the 400m hurdles. Zach Reitzug earned an automatic qualifying spot with a second place finish in the first heat. His time of 51.20 is the seventh fastest time in school history and will have him seeded third for Sunday's final. Diquis Manley earned the last spot in the finals, posting the eighth fastest time of the trials, 52.13.
Through five events in the two-day decathlon competition Andrew Huber is in great shape to score points for IU. Huber had a tremendous day, setting or matching four outdoor personal bests in his five events. In the long jump he amassed 748 points with a PR of 6.72m (22-0.75). His shot put mark of 11.64m (38-2.25) established a new PR, while his high jump mark of 1.88m (6-2) matched a career best mark. In the final event of the afternoon, Huber notched a 50.65 in the 400m dash to score 785 points. His one-day score of 3,596 points puts him in eighth place.
Through three scored events, the women's team is second with a score of 22 points, trailing the leader, Minnesota, by two and a half points. The men's team has scored six points and sits sixth in the team standings.
Day two will get started bright and early tomorrow morning with the running of the decathlon 110m hurdles at 9:30 a.m. EST. The first field event with Hoosier representation is the women's long jump. The competition is slated for a 1:20 p.m. start time. Trials for the running events will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the men's 400m dash.
