BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (29-19-2, 12-8-1) strung together three multi-run innings to defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions by a score of 10-2 on Sunday to earn the series victory.
On Senior Day, seniors Tony Butler and Craig Dedelow each had three hits on the day, with Butler driving in four runs and Dedelow driving in two runs on a home run and two doubles. Junior Logan Sowers also tallied a two-hit game, driving in two runs and homering as well. Sophomore Matt Lloyd also drove in a run in the win.
Freshman Cal Krueger tossed a quality start, going six innings, allowing five hits and one run (unearned) on three walks and four strikeouts to improve to 3-1. Freshman Cameron Beauchamp also was efficient in relief, allowing no runs and one hit in two innings of work.
Indiana jumped out to a quick three-run lead in the first, which proved to be enough to win the game. With one out, Butler singled to center and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Lloyd walked. Then with two outs, Dedelow popped one up in the infield that went untouched, resulting in a double to plate a run. A wild pitch then scored Lloyd before Sowers doubled Dedelow home to cap off the three-run frame.
The Nittany Lions got on the board in the fifth inning. A double error with one out put a runner on second, who then scored on an RBI double by PSU's Conlin Hughes. The Hoosiers rebounded in the bottom of the fifth, as an RBI single by Lloyd plated senior Alex Krupa to make it a 4-1 game.
IU tacked on to its lead in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, freshman Jeremy Houston reached second on a two-base error. After a walk to Krupa, Houston and Krupa each stole a base to put two in scoring position. Butler followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-1.
Indiana's two home runs came in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Dedelow and Sowers led off the frame going back-to-back with long balls. Senior Austin Cangelosi later reached on a pinch-hit single and then reached second after Fineman made it to first on a fielding error. After Fineman stole second, Butler delivered a two-run single to make it a 10-1 game.
Penn State got a solo home run from Christian Helsel in the top of the ninth.
Indiana hosts No. 2 Louisville on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
