1V8 Leads Indiana To Fourth Place at Big Ten Championships; Three Named All-Big Ten
5/14/2017 3:45:00 PM | Women's Rowing
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The Indiana women's rowing team, ranked No. 16 in the national polls this week and the fifth out of six Big Ten crews in the polls, ended the Big Ten Championships tied with Iowa for fourth place with 106 points at Eagle Creek Park. This marks the fourth straight year that Indiana has finished the conference championship in fourth place.
The fourth place finish likely secures a fourth consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships for the Hoosiers. The NCAA Championships take place May 26-28 in West Windsor, N.J.
Following the regatta, the All-Big Ten awards were handed out and senior Emily Barber was named First Team All-Big Ten while Emily Fekete and Hanna Henry garnered Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Henry was also named the team's Sportsmanship Honoree. For Barber, it is her second all-conference honor after being named to the second team last season.
For the Hoosiers, it all came down to the final race of the championship – the First Varsity Eights. The Hoosiers trailed Iowa by nine points entering the race and with a different of nine points between each finishing team in the race, Indiana needed to beat Iowa to tie for fourth. The 1V8 for IU entered the race as the sixth seed out of eight boats but when the dust settled, they showed the seeding to be flawed. Indiana crossed the finish line in a time of 6:15.442 to take third place, just over one second ahead of Iowa.
For the Second Varsity Eights, Indiana entered the race as the fifth seed and that's where they would finish with a time of 6:27.782 to earn 24 points.
The First Varsity Fours were the first IU boat to out-perform their seed as they entered their heat as the seventh seed. But in the final 1,000 meters of the race, they mustered up the strength and determination to push towards the finish line and finish in fifth place to earn 12 important points.
Entering their race as the sixth seed, the Indiana Novice Eight moved up one spot at the finish line, crossing with a time of 6:51.596 in fifth place.
The Second Varsity Fours finished in sixth place with a time of 7:31.472 while the Third Varsity Fours recorded a time of 7:42.389, which was good for seventh place.
The NCAA Selection Show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 5:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 16, when the full field of 24 teams will be announced.
