BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior women's tennis student Paula Gutierrez has been named the recipient of the Ohio Valley Region ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.
Gutierrez, a native of Alhaurin de la Torre, Spain, recently graduated from Indiana with a degree in Management from the Kelley School of Business.
"Paula has been a leader for our team and in the student-athlete community since her arrival on campus," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "Paula has been a major contributor in our lineup dating back to her freshman season and has made a major impact on our program."
"I am incredibly honored to receive this award," Gutierrez said. "I tried so hard this year to be a good leader for the team and for IU. I care so much about my teammates and coaches and I have always wanted the best for them. I try to lead by example and hard work. I wish I could be at Indiana longer to keep helping and supporting my teammates and this program."
Gutierrez finished her career with 74 singles wins, including a record of 23-10 in her junior season.
"Paula has always been such a great teammate and friend and has encouraged and supported me so much these past two years," sophomore Madison Appel said. "She has led our team on and off the court and has helped us in many different ways."
