BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior high jumper Paul Galas has been recognized by the magazine Diverse: Issues In Higher Education as a Second-Team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.
Diverse sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
To be eligible, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, be at least a sophomore academically and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Galas, an education major, has excelled in all areas recognized by this award. In the classroom he has earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades each of the past two seasons. He is considered one of the leaders on the track team. Paul will continue his leadership role within the athletic department during his senior year when he takes over as president of Indiana University's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The committee prides itself on serving and providing opportunities for all student-athletes.
Last summer, along with a few other IU students in the athletic department, Galas traveled to Vietnam with the Coach for College program. While there, Galas helped provide instruction in academics, athletics and life skills for underprivileged kids in rural Vietnam.
On the track, Paul has scored points at five Big Ten Championships, highlighted by a bronze medal finish in the Indoor Championships this season. His efforts in the high jump helped provide a spark for the men's team, who won the Big Ten team championship. Next weekend Paul will compete in his third consecutive NCAA East Regional meet.
