Baseball Earns Seven All-Big Ten Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball earned a total of seven, 2017 All-Big Ten baseball selections, the conference office announced on Tuesday. The voting was done by the head coaches in the conference.
Sophomore Matt Lloyd (utility) and junior Logan Sowers (outfield) each earned second team honors, while senior Craig Dedelow (outfield) and sophomore Pauly Milto (starting pitcher) picked up third team recognition. Additionally, freshmen Matt Gorski (first base), Jeremy Houston (shortstop) and Cal Krueger (starting pitcher) earned freshman team honors. Senior second baseman Tony Butler was named Indiana's Sportsmanship Award Winner.
The seven overall All-Big Ten selections are the most in the Chris Lemonis era. Additionally, for the second-straight season, IU's three freshman team selections are the most in the Big Ten.
Earning All-Big Ten honors at the utility position, Lloyd is fourth in the conference in slugging percentage (.578), tied for sixth in home runs (10) and is 15th in RBI (40). Additionally, his nine saves as a closer are tied for fourth in the league (T-51st nationally). In conference games only, the Canada native is third in slugging percentage (.674) and total bases (64), tied for third in home runs (7) and doubles (9), tied for eighth in RBI (23), ninth in batting average (.358), tied for 10th in hits (34), and 12th in on base percentage (.419). His six saves in league games only is tied for second in the Big Ten. Lloyd was named National Player of the Week by Perfect Game, National Hitter of the Week by NCBWA, and one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week following his performance at Northwestern March 24-26.
An outfield selection, Sowers leads the Big Ten in doubles (17), is tied for eighth in total bases (104), tied for ninth in home runs (9) and is 11th in slugging percentage (.500). In conference games only, he is tied for third in doubles (9), is fourth in slugging percentage (.633), tied for fourth in total bases (62), tied for fifth in home runs (6), tied for sixth in hits (35), tied for eighth in RBI (23), and is 10th in batting average (.357). Sowers has recorded a multi-hit game in nine of his last 12 games heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
Earning third team recognition as Indiana's centerfielder, Dedelow is tied for second in the Big Ten in home runs (15), is fifth in total bases (113), seventh in RBI (45), and eighth in slugging percentage (.528). In conference games only, he is second in home runs (8), tied for fourth in RBI (24), is sixth in slugging percentage (.528), and tied for ninth in total bases (53). The 15 home runs for Dedelow this season puts him in a tie for 10th place with Josh Phegley (2008) and Mike Smith (1991) for most home runs in a single season by and IU player. The senior's eight home runs this season in league games only puts him in a tie for seventh with Vasili Spanos (2003) and Doug DeVore (1999) for a single season.
Since moving to the starting rotation against Nebraska, Milto has been an effective starter for Indiana. He has posted a 5-1 record with a 3.66 ERA since joining the weekend rotation, and he has struck out 39 batters over that span, too. Currently, the sophomore is 15th in the Big Ten in ERA (3.76). In league games only, he is tied for first in wins (5), ninth in strikeouts (40) and innings pitched (47.0), 15th in ERA (3.64). Milto is allowing 42 hits over 46.2 innings of work this season.
Gorski has made an impact in his first season with IU, serving as the primary first baseman. In Big Ten games only, he is tied for fourth with eight stolen bases. Gorski is first on the team in stolen bases (12), third in batting average (.291) and fifth in on base percentage (.354).
Serving as Indiana's starting shortstop, Houston has started 41 games for the Hoosiers, having missed the other 12 in the middle of the season with an injury. Known for being sure handed defensively, Houston has made eight errors on the season, with two of them coming in the first two games of the season and two more coming on a double error. In his last 39 games, Houston has just six errors in 163 chances.
Since being named to Indiana's starting rotation, Krueger has gone 2-0 in three starts, posting a 1.62 ERA allowing 16 hits in 16.2 innings. Krueger is fifth in the Big Ten in ERA (2.48) and 12th in opposing batting average (.244). In league games only, he is fourth in ERA (2.22), tied for sixth in wins (4), and tied for 14th in opponent batting average (.250). Krueger was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on May 15 as he led the Hoosiers to a 10-2 victory over Penn State on May 14. The Jasper, Ind. native struck out four batters in 6.0 innings of work, while only allowing one run on five hits.
Indiana opens the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday with a 10 a.m. matchup with the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Bart Kaufman Field.
