Baseball Drops Big Ten Tournament Opener to Minnesota, 5-4

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (32-21-1) dropped its Big Ten opener to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (34-19) by a score of 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Luke Miller recorded two of Indiana's seven hits in the contest. Sophomore Matt Lloyd plated two runs, while seniors Craig Dedelow and Alex Krupa each drove in a run as well. Senior Tony Butler reached base three times on a hit and two walks.
Sophomore Jonathan Stiever struck out five and gave up four runs over 5.1 innings, while sophomore Tim Herrin allowed one run and struck out two in 2.2 innings of work.
Minnesota struck in the first inning, as Toby Hanson scored on a single to center, scoring Terrin Vavra. The Hoosiers rebounded back though in the next half frame. With one out in the second, Miller doubled down the right field line. Then with two outs, an RBI single by Krupa plated Miller to even the game back up at one.
The Hoosiers took the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a leadoff home run by Dedelow.
Then in top of the fifth, Indiana extended the lead with a two-run frame. With one out, Houston walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. Following a walk and steal by Butler to put runners on second and third, Lloyd doubled to left center to plate two runs, making it a 4-1 game.
The Golden Gophers worked a two-out single, which was followed by a two-run home run by Jordan Kozicky to trim the Hoosier lead to one.
A leadoff double by Minnesota's Micah Coffey set things up early in the bottom of the sixth. A sacricfice fly scored Coffey to even the game up at four runs apiece.
The game-winning run for the Golden Gophers came in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Petterson hit a one-out double and moved on to third on a wild pitch. Herrin struck out Kozicky swinging before Vavra lined one off Herrin's glove to score the winning run.
Indiana will play at 10 a.m. on Thursday against the loser of Northwestern and Michigan.
