LEXINGTON, Ky. – Day one from the NCAA East Prelims brought a chilly, rainy afternoon to the Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field. Indiana battled the elements to send one Hoosier to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. and another to the quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon.
Senior Sydney Clute claimed second in the women's pole vault. Her clearance of 4.20m (13-9.25) nabbed a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene a couple weeks from now. The reigning Big Ten champion passed on the opening height of 3.80m, before entering the competition at 3.95m. She cleared the height with ease on her first attempt. At 4.10m, she clipped the bar on her first attempt but rebounded nicely to clear on her second attempt. Her final clearance came on her first attempt at 4.20m (13-9.25).
Zach Reitzug finished third in his heat to earn an automatic qualification into the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles. Reitzug sprinted out to a great start and never looked back. He battled with Florida's Eric Hutch, the reigning NCAA champion in the event, for most of the race. Ultimately, his time of 51.61 earned him the seventh quickest time heading into tomorrow's quarterfinal action. He will compete at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow night as he looks to punch his ticket to Eugene.
Reitzug's teammate, Diquis Manley, was running a tremendous race before clipping the eighth hurdle and falling to the track. His fall did not allow him to finish the race. Manley closed out his Hoosier track and field career as a two-time individual Big Ten point scorer, including a third place finish this year in the 400m hurdles.
In the women's hammer throw, Nakel McClinton held the sixth spot with a throw of 57.07 (187-3) through two flights. At the conclusion of the event she sat in 17th. On the men's side Andrew Miller finished 22nd with a mark of 63.35m (207-10).
A trio of Hoosiers ran in the 1,500m first round. Katherine Receveur and Brenna Calder took 26th and 28th, respectively, both narrowly missing a chance to run in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Kyle Mau finished in 37th on the men's side.
Kelsey Harris was the quickest Hoosier in the women's 800m run, taking 31st. Teammate Olivia Hippensteel took 37th in her final race in the cream and crimson jersey. On the men's side, Jordan Huntoon finished 23rd.
Another senior, Ari Nelson, closed out her tremendous Indiana track and field career. She finished 23rd in the long jump with a mark of 6.06m (19-10.75). Nelson finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships a couple of weeks ago. Treyton Harris finished 37th on the men's side.
Day two will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the women's discus throw. The first running event with Hoosier representation will be the first round of the 110m hurdles. William Session will take to the start line at approximately 5:00 p.m. tomorrow evening.
