WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Indiana rowing team began another thrilling weekend at the NCAA Rowing Championships, their fourth consecutive appearance, with Friday's opening action at Mercer Lake. All three boats secured top-four finishes in their heats and will advance to the repechage round on Friday afternoon. The Hoosiers' 1V8 boat earned the highest heat finish, third-place, in the first IU race of the weekend.
Sparking the action for Indiana was the 1V8 crew in the third heat of the morning. They raced in the quickest heat of the opening round and crossed the finish line in third-place with a time of 6:18.888. Coxswain Emily Fekete and her crew pushed the pace in a battle for third with Syracuse, but the Hoosiers pulled away in the final 500 meters for a two-second differential.
The Hoosiers' 2V8 crew entered the repechage round with a fourth-place finish in a tough second heat, with their bow ball crossing the line at 6:27.901. Another hard-fought battle for position against Syracuse tipped in the Orange's favor, as they finished less than a second before the Indiana boat.
Wrapping up the first session in the 1V4 heats, coxswain Morgan McKay and the Hoosiers earned fourth-place in the third heat. To earn that place, Indiana utilized a strong start in the first 500 meters to gain a lead on Navy. By the end of the course, they crossed the line seven seconds ahead of the Midshipmen to earn a favorable lane assignment in the repechage.
