Indiana’s 2V8 crew takes 13th overall with strong final race
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Indiana rowing team wrapped their 18th varsity season with Sunday's final round of the 2017 NCAA Championships. The Hoosiers took 12th-place in the final team standings, scoring 62 points with a trio of top-15 finishes. The 1V8 brought home a 12th place finish while the 2V8 was 13th and the 1V4 was 14th.
The 1V4 Indiana crew started the team's morning in their C Final heat, taking the start line in the third lane. The battle for second place was fierce for the entire course, sometimes changing meter-by-meter, but Indiana prevailed with the second-place finish to take a 14th-place result on the weekend. The Hoosiers ultimately made their move after the midpoint, passing Notre Dame and holding their spot to the finish line.
The five-woman crew put the finishing touches on an impressive weekend at Mercer Lake, including a come-from-behind heat victory in Saturday's C/D Semifinal, to deliver on their initial seeding entering the weekend. Their fastest race of the weekend came in Friday's repechage, as they finished in 7:15.962.
Next came the 2V8 crew, who completed an outstanding weekend with another heat victory in Sunday's C Final. They nearly led the race wire-to-wire, crossing the line at 6:46.939 to hold off a late surge from Washington State. Overall the crew finished 13th in their group, two spots ahead of their initial seeding.
The 2V8 crew, according to head coach Steve Peterson, rowed the team's best race of the opening day and never looked back. They nearly pushed Princeton for a NCAA semifinal spot in their repechage and ended the weekend with back-to-back heat victories, including an open water victory in Saturday's C/D Semifinals.
Indiana's 1V8 boat propelled their way to a 12th-place overall finish after taking sixth in the penultimate race of the weekend, the 1V8 petite final. It's the third time in program history that IU's top boat has earned a top-12 finish, the third time in four seasons.
The day marked the final races for Indiana's senior class: Emily Barber, Hanna Henry, Alexandra Eaton, Emily Fekete, Spencer Manton, and Kaelin Blessinger. To call this class significant to Indiana's rowing program is an understatement, as they are the first graduating class to reach the NCAA Rowing Championships in each of their four seasons.
