BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore Madison Appel has been named to the All-Big Ten Team, the conference announced today.
Appel, a native of Locust Valley, N.Y., posted a record of 17-15 in singles and 29-7 in doubles to earn a place on the 14-member team.
Appel played No. 1 singles for the Hoosiers and finished the season with a 12-10 dual match record. Also, playing No. 1 doubles with teammates Kim Schmider, Appel went 13-5 in dual match play.
A highlight of the season occurred when Appel and Schmider knocked off the then No. 1 doubles team in the country, Aldila Sutjiadi and Mami Adachi of Kentucky, 6-4 on February 19. The previous day they earned a win over then No. 32 doubles team in the country, from Notre Dame.
"The coaching staff is so proud of Madison's selection to the All-Big Ten Team," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "She has made great strides this season in many areas, and her hard work is beginning to show up in her results. We are excited for her continued development over the next couple of seasons, and we look forward to helping her achieve all of her goals as a player and student-athlete."
"I'm honored to earn this recognition," Appel said. "After a lot of hard work I'm really happy with how the season turned out. It means a lot to me to have this honor and I'm excited about the years to come."
Freshman Pauline Jahren earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship award.
