Hoosiers Clinch Series with 14-3 Victory over Xavier

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana baseball (26-17-2) strung together five multi-run innings and 16 hits to pick up a 14-3 victory over the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field.
Seven of Indiana's 16 hits went for extra-bases, with senior Austin Cangelosi and junior Logan Sowers each homering in the contest. Cangelosi drove in two runs on the afternoon and scored three times, while Sowers went 2-for-4 and added a double. Sophomore Matt Lloyd and sophomore Ryan Fineman each lead Indiana with three hits apiece, as Lloyd drove in three runs while smacking two doubles and Fineman collected two RBI and scored twice. Senior Craig Dedelow and freshman Jeremy Houston also contributed two-hit games as well.
Freshman right hander Cal Krueger started for Indiana, going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out three. Junior B.J. Sabol picked up his fifth win of the season, going 1.1 frames without allowing a hit. Junior Brian Hobbie and senior Luke Stephenson closed out the game, combining for three innings and one run.
Sophomore Luke Miller led off the second with a single. Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice that advanced Miller to second, Fineman connected on a base-hit up the middle to score Miller with two outs. Following a walk to Cangelosi, Houston had another single up the middle for the Hoosiers, scoring Fineman to make it a 2-0 game.
After the Musketeers picked up a run in the third, the Hoosiers came back with a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Sowers led off the frame with a double to left field. Then with one out, Cangelosi went the opposite way with a two-run shot, his second of the season, to extend the lead to 4-1.
Xavier once again tried to climb into the lead with one spot in the fifth inning before Indiana came back with four in the bottom of the sixth. A walk by Cangelosi, a sac bunt by Houston, and a base-hit by senior Alex Krupa gave the Hoosiers runners on the corners with one out. A walk by senior Tony Butler led to back-to-back bases loaded walks. RBI singles by Dedelow and Fineman later in the inning extended IU's lead to 8-2.
Following a one-run frame by Xavier in top of the seventh, the Hoosiers closed the game with six-straight runs, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. A walk to Houston and a double by Butler led to Lloyd's two-run double in the seventh. Sowers led off the eighth with his seventh home run of the year. From there, Fineman singled and scored on a throwing error, Cangelosi reached on an error and scored on Houston's RBI single, and freshman Pat Loeffler drove in Houston on a sacrifice fly to make it 14-1.
Indiana and Xavier will close out the three-game set on Sunday with a first pitch time of 1:05 p.m.
