Zeller A Hoosier For Life
5/6/2017 12:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BLOOMINGTON, Indiana - Cody Zeller accomplished many great things during his two-year career with the storied Indiana men's basketball program. He was a first-team All-American, a first-team Academic All-American, Big Ten Freshman of the Year, but most of all was seen as the cornerstone to the unprecedented rebuild of the Hoosiers, which saw them win their first Big Ten outright title and back to back Sweet Sixteen appearances for the first time in more than 20 years.
The Washington, Indiana, native came to Indiana not only as a difference maker on the court, but brought a near perfect academic record that allowed him to earn college credits before moving to Bloomington and allowed him to leave for the NBA Draft just 35 credits short of a degree.
On May 5, 2017, he returned to Bloomington to receive his bachelor's degree in management from the prestigious Kelley School of Business. He is the first former men's basketball player to take advantage of the 'Hoosier for Life' program that was included in the Student-Athlete Bill of Rights which was adopted in the summer of 2014. The program encourages former scholarship athletes who left the University for any reason in good standing to complete their degree while the department pays for their tuition and books once the former athlete sets up a plan to complete their undergraduate degree requirements.
Family Matters
If you know the Zeller family, you are aware how competitive Steve and Lorri's three sons are. Luke (Notre Dame), Tyler (North Carolina) and Cody all won state championships during their career at Washington High School with each being named Indiana's Mr. Basketball after their senior year. All three played in the NCAA Tournament at their respective school's with Tyler helping the Tar Heels to a national championship. All three found their way to the NBA with Luke (Phoenix), Tyler (Cleveland and Boston) and Cody (Charlotte) all achieving their dreams of playing professional basketball.
However, Luke and Tyler both played four years and earned their degree's weeks after finishing their college basketball careers. Cody, however, chose to leave IU after his second year and was rewarded by being chosen as the 4th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. For the next four years, Cody was reminded any time he was in the presence of his siblings that he was the family's only "college dropout."
He showed tremendous discipline and time management in working as often as he could on the road to complete his coursework online and maintain the standard of excellence he came to expect of himself.
After Friday, his brother's will have to find something else to get under his skin.
