BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind a complete game shutout from sophomore Tara Trainer, Indiana Softball (23-28, 9-12 Big Ten) shut out Michigan State (27-21, 9-12 Big Ten) on Saturday afternoon at Andy Mohr Field, 1-0.
Trainer allowed just three hits and one walk on the day as she struck out six in her fifth shutout and 16th complete game of the season.
Indiana's winning run came courtesy of junior Rachel O'Malley, who doubled to right field in the fifth inning to bring home junior Rebecca Blitz, who had reached on a lead-off single. O'Malley sent the one-out shot high as the wind took it out of the reach of Michigan State right fielder Kelly Zackrison.
Senior Erin Lehman and freshmen Gabbi Jenkins, Bella Norton and Katie Lacefield each collected one hit in the game for Indiana.
The Hoosiers had chances to get on the board early as they loaded the bases in both the third and fourth innings, however MSU pitcher Bridgette Rainey left them packed each time. Rainey finished the game with three strikeouts and five walks in a complete game outing.
Trainer didn't allow a MSU runner to reach base until the third, when Melanie Baccay hit a two-out single to center.
The Spartans threated in the fifth as a walk, single and wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. However, Trainer caught Baccay looking to end the frame. In the sixth, Michigan State put a runner on third for the second time on a throwing error and wild pitch but Trainer once again worked out of the jam, thanks in part to a diving grab by Lehman at second base.
Indiana and Michigan State return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, seniors Lehman, Maria Latimer, Kayla Mathewson and CaraMia Tsirigos will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities. Admission to the game is free of charge.
