LEXINGTON, KY. - Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Indiana baseball (27-18-2) surrendered four runs in the first two innings, ultimately falling to the No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats (33-16) on Tuesday night by a final score of 5-2.
Junior Matt Lloyd and sophomore Luke Miller each tallied long balls in the effort, with Miller leading the way with two hits while senior Tony Butler and freshman Jeremy Houston each tallied a hit.
On the mound, Indiana got a strong relief outing from junior B.J. Sabol, who allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings, striking out four and not surrendering a run. Freshman Cameron Beauchamp also tossed a scoreless frame in the loss.
Lloyd turned on a two-out offering in the first and launched it to the opposite field to put the Hoosiers up, 1-0. Kentucky went on to use two, two-out RBI singles to go ahead 2-0 in the bottom half of the frame.
Three, two-out doubles in the second pushed Kentucky's lead to 4-1.
Miller brought the score back within two runs, 4-2, in the top of the fourth following a leadoff home run over the wall in right field.
The Wildcats looked to extend their lead in the fifth inning before Sabol forced a 4-6-3 double play to keep Indiana's deficit to two runs.
Kentucky added a run in the seventh inning before a mistake on the base paths resulted in Indiana's defense turning a 1-4-5 tag out at third base, keeping the score 5-2.
Indiana got the leadoff guy on in Miller in top of the ninth, as he singled. Kentucky's first baseman made a nice diving stop on Dedelow's ensuing at bat to squander the rally.
Indiana returns home this weekend for a three-game series with Penn State. Friday's first pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
