BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team will play 16 matches at home and host two non-conference tournaments in the 2017 season.
In the 2016 season the Hoosiers won 17 matches, their most since the 2010 Sweet 16 season. The team started 9-0 for the fourth time in school history and had an 11-2 non-conference record, which earned them a No. 34 RPI ranking.
Additionally, the Hoosiers beat two ranked opponents and earned wins over four teams that made the 2016 NCAA Tournament. In the 2017 season, the Hoosiers will play 11 teams that made the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
The Hoosiers open the season on Friday August 25 by hosting the Indiana Invitational with Ball State, DePaul and Indiana State.
"We open at home and host two tournaments in 2017," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "We have played both Indiana State and Ball State in the spring so we've had a pretty good look at what they have. Indiana State is under a new coaching staff so I'm sure we'll see them make changes and put their mark on the program and Ball State continues to improve under Kelli Miller, long-time assistant under Steve Shondell and now head coach there. They impressed me this spring so we'll definitely have to be ready for them the opening weekend."
The second weekend of the season the Hoosiers travel to the nation's capital for the Colonial Challenge, hosted by George Washington. Indiana will take on George Washington, Hofstra and LIU-Brooklyn.
"George Washington will be a great tournament for us to attend," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "It's Washington D.C. so we'll combine some sightseeing with playing some good competition."
Indiana will travel to Evansville for the Dunn Hospitality Tournament, September 8-9 where they will matchup against Evansville, UT-Martin and UAB.
The team will finish the non-conference schedule with the Hoosier Classic, September 15-16. The Hoosiers will welcome UNLV, Samford and Florida Gulf Coast.
"Our last home tournament sets us up for the ever competitive Big Ten," Dunbar Kruzan said. "We have three quality opponents coming to Bloomington with very high RPI's last year and we expect all three to be great volleyball matches in University Gym. Florida Gulf Coast hosted us last year and we lost a very tight match in five sets. Samford is coached my Keylor Chan, former coach of Northwestern who I have a lot of respect for. UNLV finished last season 24-8 and brings a great name to Bloomington that all basketball fans know. They are also a very good volleyball school now."
The Hoosiers kick off Big Ten play on Wednesday Sept. 20 by hosting Illinois. The week of September 25 the Hoosiers will take on Purdue twice, once in West Lafayette on Sept. 27 and at University Gym on Sept. 30. The Hoosiers Dig Pink match will be Friday October 20 against Rutgers.
The Big Ten is always difficult," Dunbar-Kruzan said. "I believe we'll see a little different look this year. The conference had several teams with a lot of seniors so those teams will be fairly young this year. Then we have a few that return most of their roster so they will be show their experience playing at a high level. We are one of the young teams with 11 freshmen and sophomores. I don't see that as a disadvantage though. We have some great ball control coming in and I think our returners have made some great improvements to their game over the spring."
