Hoosiers Commence Freestyle Season in Akron

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Hoosiers' wrestling team opens the summer freestyle season with this weekend's main event, the 2017 UWW Cadet and University Nationals. Nine Hoosiers are registered to take the mat for the University Nationals, which will take place on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 in the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House at the University of Akron.

Leading the field for Indiana is recent NCAA Championships qualifier Devin Skatzka (80 kg), who reached the quarterfinals last season with two technical falls and a decision win over Jonathan Schleifer (Princeton). Jake Hinz (86 kg) also returns to the field after a quarterfinal appearance last summer, scoring one technical fall between two grind-it-out decision victories.
After promising showings with a couple of wins last summer, Norman Conley (86 kg) and Fletcher Miller (125 kg) return in hopes of making a deep weekend run against some of the best current and recent college grapplers. Also returning to the field from last year is Bryce Martin (86 kg), who recently put together a promising folkstyle campaign at 165 lbs. last semester.
Hoosiers entering the University Nationals field for the first time include Liam Cronin (57 kg), Spencer Irick (86 kg), Jake Kleimola (97 kg), and Cole Weaver (66 kg). Weaver missed last year's action due to injury, while Irick and Kleimola are making competitive returns from injury this weekend.
Cronin, who cut his teeth at 125 lbs. in his true freshman season, will debut at the university freestyle level after an illustrious cadet career. The Orange, California native was a seven-time Junior Fargo All-American across both Freestyle and Greco-Roman, but this will mark the first summer tournament of his time at Indiana.
