SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four Hoosiers competed in the USATF Outdoor Nationals on Friday. A pair of IU athletes, Jenna Jungels and Khayla Dawson, competed in the Junior Nationals. Katherine Receveur and Eric Bethea took aim at the Senior Nationals.
Despite running a 15:51.14, Katherine Receveur finished 16th in the women's 5,000m run at the USATF Outdoor Championships. She has now run the three fastest times in the event in school history, all of which have come this season. The sophomore All-American was able to keep contact with the lead group through a majority of the race, hanging within a couple seconds of the leader through eight-and-a-half laps. The lead group made a big move at that time, dropping the rest of the field.
Eric Bethea took 16th in the triple jump with a mark of 14.78m (48-6). He hit that mark on his first attempt of the evening. The initial mark landed him in 10th following the first round of jumps. He went on to foul his final two attempts and fell to 16th place.
Khayla Dawson finished third in the shot put at the Junior Outdoor Championships. Her first throw of the evening traveled 15.91m (52-2.5), vaulting her into second place through the initial round. In the next flight, she uncorked a put of 16.10m (52-10) to take the lead. Although she did not improve upon her mark in the third round, she carried the lead into the finals. Her second round throw of 16.10m (52-10) proved to be her best of the competition, and was good for a third place finish in the event.
Jenna Jungels took ninth in the long jump with a jump of 5.78m (18-11.75). After the first round of jumps, the freshman saw herself in sixth place with a jump of 5.62m (18-5.25). Her second jump of the afternoon improved upon her first by about half of a foot, leaping to a mark of 5.78m (18-11.75), but she dropped to seventh in the standings. After the third round she sat in ninth, just missing the final three jumps.
Tomorrow's action will feature Grace Walther in the 1,500m run. The freshman will take to the starting line at approximately 8:00 p.m. EST.
