Indiana’s slate features the defending NCAA champ for the second year running
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey head coach Amanda Janney is excited to reveal the Hoosiers' route through her third season with Thursday's announcement of the 2017 fall season schedule. The Hoosiers' 18-game schedule hits the ground running from the opening weekend, and ends with an exciting remodel of the Big Ten's postseason proceedings.
For the second year in a row, the Hoosiers will take the turf against the defending NCAA Champion. This year will be on neutral ground, however, as they face the Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday, August 26 at Louisville's Trager Stadium, the host of this season's 2017 NCAA Field Hockey Championship. In total the Hoosiers will meet eight teams that landed in last year's final NFHCA Coaches' Poll, six NCAA Tournament selections, and three conference champions.
Preceding the game with Delaware will be Indiana's season opener at Louisville on August 25, marking the third consecutive season with the Hoosiers facing the Cardinals in the opening weekend. The game, annually known as the "Battle of the Border", will continue an out-of-conference rivalry series that has existed for the last 16 seasons.
The Hoosiers will spend Labor Day weekend in the Keystone State, starting with a neutral site clash against Wake Forest on Friday, September 1 at Penn State's Field Hockey Complex. That Monday, Indiana continues eastward as they face Villanova on Monday, September 4 at noon.
Indiana's first home stand includes four games spread over two weekends. The home opener against Central Michigan will set off at 3:00 p.m. ET on Friday, September 8, followed by a Sunday, September 10 game against Miami at noon.
That next weekend, the Hoosiers will embark on their Big Ten season at home against the Maryland Terrapins on Friday afternoon, September 15. Indiana will end their first home stretch later that weekend against Ball State on Sunday, September 17.
The following two weekends will send the Hoosiers to opposite sides of Big Ten country. First, Indiana travels to Rutgers on Friday, September 22 before facing the reigning MAAC Champion Monmouth on Sunday, September 24.
The road stretch takes a westward leap on Friday, September 29 when the Hoosiers and travel to Iowa before their Sunday, October 1 game at Saint Louis University.
After a split weekend at Northwestern (Oct. 6) and home against Ohio (Oct. 8), Indiana will play host to two home Big Ten games in the same weekend. The Hoosiers begin on Friday afternoon, October 13 against Michigan at 3:00 p.m. ET before playing the Spartans on Sunday, October 15 at noon.
The Hoosiers will conclude their away schedule Friday, October 20 against Ohio State at 3:00 p.m. ET. Indiana's 2017 senior day will take place on Sunday, October 22 against Penn State at 1:00 p.m. ET. The Hoosiers' senior class—Cameron Gibson, Elle Hempt, Katie Johnson, Maddie Latino, Taylor Pearson, and Abby Urbanek—will play their final home game as Hoosiers at the IU Field Hockey Complex.
The Big Ten Conference announced this spring a change to the future format of the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. Rather than eight-of-nine teams making the field for a one-weekend tournament, next season all nine field hockey members will enter a two-weekend tournament format similar to the current setup of the Big Ten Men's and Women's Soccer Tournaments.
The first weekend of the Big Ten Tournament, running October 27-29, will feature the higher seeds playing host to lower seeds at individual sites. The three highest seeds receive a bye through the first of two rounds taking place that weekend. The semifinals and championship game will continue the next weekend, November 3-5, with all three games played at Michigan State's Ralph Young Field.
The opening round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament will run Saturday-Sunday, November 11-12 with the host sites yet to be determined. The NCAA semifinals, national championship game, and NFHCA Senior All-Star Game will all take place on the weekend of November 17-19 at Louisville's Trager Stadium.
