Pieroni Places Sixth in 100 Freestyle at Swimming Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University's Blake Pieroni had a great showing at the 2017 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis on Tuesday.
The rising senior placed sixth in the A Final of the 100 freestyle, touching the wall with a school record time of 48.49. With his finish, Pieroni is now eligible to be selected for Team USA in the 4x100 relay at the 2017 FINA World Championships next month in Budapest.
Last summer, Pieroni was a member of the gold medal-winning 400 freestyle relay for Team USA at the Rio Olympics.
The Hoosiers showed off their depth in the men's 1,500 freestyle, with five swimmers placing in the top-40. Trey Hubbuch led the way, placing 22nd with a time of 15:34.94, while Ethan Curl took 27th with a mark of 15:38.02.
Matthew Anderson was 30th overall with a time of 15:45.19, while Adam Destrampe took 37th with mark of 15:51.48. Jack Collins was 40th in 16:07.21.
In the 800 freestyle, rising sophomore Cassy Jernberg placed 25th overall with a time of 8:47.83.
Earlier in the day for the IU women, Delaney Barnard placed 40th with a time of 56.33, while Shelby Koontz was 67th with a mark of 57.12. Grace Haskett was 96th in 58.01. For the men, Ian Finnerty was 40th in a time of 50.33.
In the 200 butterfly, IU alum Max Irwin placed 47th with a time of 2:04.64, while on the women's side, Reagan Cook was 62nd with a mark of 2:19.59.
Competition at the 2017 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals continues on Wednesday with the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 50 butterfly at the IU Natatorium. Prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. ET, with finals at 6:00 p.m. ET.
