LEXINGTON, Ky. – Led by a three-home run effort by junior Logan Sowers and a complete game by sophomore Jonathan Stiever, Indiana baseball (34-23-2) earned an 11-2 victory over Ohio ?on Saturday afternoon in the Lexington Regional elimination game.
Sowers was 4-for-5 on the day with a career-high three home runs, five RBI and four runs scored. After giving up two runs in the first, Stiever settled down and allowed seven hits in the nine innings of work, his first career complete game.
Senior Tony Butler also tallied a three-hit game in the win while freshman Matt Gorski chipped in two hits. Gorski (1) along with freshman Jake Matheny (2), senior Craig Dedelow (1) and sophomore Luke Miller (1) each had RBIs in the victory.
The Bobcats started their set of at-bats with a single and a double to put runners on the corners with no outs. Back-to-back walks plated the game's first run with no outs and the bases loaded. Ohio's Connor Callery followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to give the home team a 2-0 edge. Stiever forced a double play ball to end the threat.
Indiana plated a rebound run in the top of the second as Sowers knocked out his 10th home run of the season. It marked the first time since 2010 that the Hoosiers have had four players on the year hit double-digit home runs.
Dedelow powered his 18th home run of the season in the fourth inning to knot the game up at two. His 18 home runs are tied for sixth place with Kyle Schwarber (2013) and Alex Smith (1986) for most home runs in a single season at IU. Following the Dedelow home run, Sowers singled, Gorski walked and senior Austin Cangelosi bunted the runners over. Matheny delivered a two run single to give Indiana its first lead of the game, 4-2.
The Hoosiers tacked on some more insurance in the fifth inning. Dedelow led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Gorski then delivered an RBI double to score Dedelow from first to make it a 5-2 contest. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Butler singled and advanced to second, where Miller hit a chopper that ate up the third baseman to plate Butler, extending the lead to four runs.
In the bottom of the sixth frame, Stiever surrendered an infield single and a one-out double to give the Bobcats runners on second and third. The sophomore escaped the jam though, forcing two popouts to keep the lead in check.
Sowers knocked out his second of the game and 11th of the season in the top of the 7th to make it a 7-2 game.
A four-run eighth put the game out of reach with an RBI single for Miller and a three-run home run by Sowers.
Indiana will play the loser of N.C. State and Kentucky, who play ?at 7 p.m. on Saturday, in an elimination game ?at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
