Six Hoosiers Prep for NCAA Championships
6/5/2017 2:08:00 PM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University track and field team will send six athletes to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the NCAA Championships. The competition will take place over a four-day period at the historic Hayward Field on the campus of Oregon University.
Sydney Clute enters the weekend as one of the favorites in the pole vault competition with the third best mark this season (4.55m – 14-11). Only two-and-a-half inches separates her from the NCAA leader in the event. Clute earned first team All-America honors in 2014 (eighth place finish) and in 2016 (fourth place finish). So far this season, she has shattered her own school record, topped the Big Ten Conference record, won the Outdoor Big Ten Championship, set the Big Ten Championships meet record and took home Field Athlete of the Championships. The pole vault competition is slated to begin at 8:00 p.m. EST on Thursday evening.
Willie Morrison has been climbing the record books since he stepped foot on campus a year ago. He broke the school record in the shot put at the Rankin/Poehlein Invitational at Purdue earlier this season, before topping it once again on his second throw of the NCAA East Preliminary Round. His mark of 19.69m (64-7.25) is the fourth best throw heading into the NCAA Championships this weekend. Morrison earned Second-Team All-America distinctions last season and finished 10th at the Indoor National Championships. Morrison, and the rest of the shot put field, will begin at 9:40 p.m. EST on Wednesday.
Katherine Receveur has excelled in her sophomore season in the Cream and Crimson. She will run in the 5,000m finals on Saturday evening. Receveur holds the fourth fastest time this season of anyone in the field with her time of 15:46.33 at the Stanford Invite. Her time of 16:11.57 at the NCAA East Preliminary Round ranks as the sixth fastest seed time. Receveur ran to All-America accolades in both cross country (11th place finish) and indoor track (sixth place in the 3,000m run). The women's 5k will take to the start line at 8:25 p.m. EST on the final day of competition.
Jason Crist, who seemingly always saves his best for the end of the season, posted the sixth fastest seed time in the 5,000m run to advance to the NCAA finals. Despite running a large majority of the race near the back of the pack, Crist stormed all the way back to secure a spot in the finals at the prelims in Lexington. His race will begin at 10:25 p.m. EST on Friday night.
Eric Bethea has had a breakthrough sophomore season in the triple jump. During the indoor season he secured a Big Ten Championship in the event. Bethea finished 14th at the Indoor NCAA Championships to earn Second-Team All-America status. His mark of 15.63m in the East Preliminary Round punched his ticket into the Outdoor NCAA Championships. The triple jump starts at 8:40 p.m. EST on Friday evening.
William Session punched his ticket into the NCAA semifinals by nabbing one of the three automatic qualifier spots in his heat of the 110m hurdle quarterfinals in Lexington. His time of 13.92 ranks eighth in school history. The true freshman will be competing in his first NCAA Championships meet. The 110m hurdle semis will start at 8:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday with the finals being run at 9:15 p.m. EST on Friday.
