EUGENE, Ore. – A total of two Hoosiers competing in the first day of the NCAA Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Willie Morrison added another All-America accolade to his already illustrious shot put career. William Session made the most of his first NCAA race by outdoing his seed.
Willie Morrison finished ninth in the shot put to earn his third straight Second-Team All-America honors. His second throw of the evening was his best as he hit a mark of 18.97m (62-3). He made the final round with that throw but was unable to improve upon his mark in the finals.
Morrison finished 16th at last season's Outdoor National Championships and earned a 10th place finish at the Indoor NCAA's earlier this season. His ninth place finish is the best finish for a men's shot putter since 1996 when Nathan Davis also finished ninth. Morrison becomes just the seventh thrower to earn All-America status in the outdoor shot put and the first to earn multiple honors.
William Session outran his seed mark by five spots, placing 19th in the 110m hurdles. His time of 13.91 marks a season best for the freshman and keeps him eighth on Indiana's all-time performer list in the event. Session finished sixth in the final semifinal heat.
The freshman becomes the first All-American in the men's 100m hurdles since Glenn Terry won the 1993 National Championships in the event. Session concludes his freshman campaign as a three-time Big Ten point scorer, including seventh place finishes in both the 60m hurdles and 110m hurdles and an eighth place team finish in the 4x100m relay.
Day two's IU slate will consist of the women's pole vault. Sydney Clute will aim to achieve her third First-Team All-America nod in the last four seasons. She will begin jumping at 8:00 p.m. EST.
