BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Amanda Cahill (women's basketball) and Matt Schwartzer (men's cross country) have been named Indiana's recipients of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The pair was chosen as two of 28 honorees selected from a group of more than 350 students honored through the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution.
All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Cahill is an All-Big Ten second team selection for the Hoosiers in 2016-17, as she averaged 14.8 points and led with 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent from 3-point range. She became the 26th player in school history to record 1,000 points in 2016-17, and currently ranks 14th all-time in scoring (1,321) and sixth all-time in rebounds (820).
The Clyde, Ohio native scored in double figures in 33 of 34 games this season including the last 27 games of the season and also recorded 12 double-doubles. Her efforts led Indiana to program record 23 wins and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the postseason WNIT. In addition, Cahill earned the program's fifth CoSIDA Academic All-American honor, holding a 3.90 GPA in Elementary education.
Schwartzer, a Virginia Beach, Va. Native, graduated with a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship and supply chain management from the Kelley School of Business. He is currently working towards his master's degree in data science through the IU School of Informatics and Computing. He was named Academic All-Big Ten three times in his prolific career.
Athletically, Schwartzer was a three-time All-Big Ten cross country runner and has helped lead IU to the 2013 Big Ten cross country title. Schwartzer was a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier in cross country. Throughout his entire cross country career, he was viewed by his teammates as a leader and someone that proudly represented what it meant to be a Hoosier.
