Clute Nabs All-America Honors in Pole Vault
6/8/2017 10:26:00 PM | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Sydney Clute claimed her third Outdoor First-Team All-America honor in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40m (14-5.25). Her fourth place finish earned her First-Team All-America accolades, the 11th All-American vault coach Jake Wiseman has mentored in his 12 seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Her fourth place finish matched her 2016 outcome. The Indiana University track and field team has produced an Outdoor All-American women's field athlete in eight of the last nine seasons, including nine 10 First-Teamers during that stretch.
Clute opened the competition with an easy clearance on her first attempt at 4.00m (13-1.5), and would top 4.15m (13-7.25) on her first attempt as well. The third height of the evening, 4.30m (14-1.25) provided her first miss. She barely clipped the bar, but atoned for her miss on her second attempt. With just seven competitors left, the bar was moved up to 4.40m (14-5.25).
The senior had no problems clearing the height on her first attempt, moving her into fourth place of the competition. Only one vaulter was eliminated following the height, so the bar moved up to 4.45m (14-7). Clute's first and second attempts were near misses. Her third and final attempt was her closest at the height, but she failed to clear.
Clute closes out her terrific career at Indiana as one of the most decorated women's vaulters in Big Ten history. During her five-year career in the cream and crimson, Clute captured three Big Ten titles, established the school and Big Ten record with a clearance of 4.55m (14-11) at the Big Ten v. Pac-12 Challenge, broke her own Championships Meet record this season with a mark of 4.43m (14-6.25) and was named the Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Championships this season.
Clute becomes the first women's pole vaulter in school history to earn All-America accolades four times, and just the second to earn first team All-America honors three times, joining Vera Neuenswander.
Tomorrow's slate features Eric Bethea in the men's triple jump and Jason Crist in the men's 5,000m run. Bethea will jump at 8:40 p.m. EST and Crist will take to the starting line at 10:25 p.m. EST. Make sure to follow along with the live results or via the team's Twitter page.
