EUGENE, Ore. – On the final day of men's competition in the NCAA Championships, the Indiana track and field team saw its two competitors take home honorable mention All-America distinctions.
Jason Crist finished 20th in the 5,000m run. He stuck to the game plan, running near the back of the pack for the entirety of the race. The senior stayed lumped in with the lead back for most of the twelve-and-a-half lap race. The race started to thin out with about three laps remaining. Crist attempted to make a move, but he was too far removed from the leaders. He passed a handful of runners to earn honorable mention All-America honors with a time of 14:53.63.
Crist closed out his senior campaign as a four-time All-Big Ten cross country runner, including a three-time First-Teamer. He is the first Hoosier 5k runner to earn All-America accolades since Matt Schwartzer crossed 17th in 2014.
Eric Bethea finished 22nd in the triple jump to lock up honorable mention All-America status in the event. The sophomore's first jump of the night was 14.85m (48-8.75) into a slight tailwind. The New Jersey native did not improve on his second attempt but hit a mark of 15.03m (49-3.75) on his final jump.
Bethea becomes the sixth Hoosier triple jumper to take home All-America honors, the first since Aarik Wilson finished with the bronze in 2005. Bethea took Second-Team honors in the Indoor National Championships with a 14th place finish earlier this season. Prior to that, he claimed a Big Ten championship in the event.
Hoosier representation at the NCAA Championships will conclude tomorrow with the women's 5,000m run. Katherine Receveur will look to complete her historic season in style at 8:25 p.m. EST.
