
IU Alum Miller Places Fifth in 100 Breast at World Championships

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Indiana University alum Cody Miller placed fifth overall in the men's 100 breaststroke on Monday at the 2017 FINA Swimming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Miller, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics bronze medalist in the event, just missed out on a podium finish on Monday, touching the wall in a time of 59.11 – 0.06 seconds behind bronze medalist Kirill Prigoda of Russia.
In the women's 200 breaststroke, reigning gold medalist from the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics Lilly King will be the No. 2 seed for Tuesday's championship final after touching the wall with a personal-best and IU school record time of 1:04.53.
With her time, King just missed the American record (1:04.45), became the second-fastest American and the fourth-fastest performer in the event all-time.
In the men's 200 freestyle, IU's Blake Pieroni, fresh off winning a gold medal with Team USA on Sunday in the 4x100m freestyle relay, placed 13th in the world in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.08.
IU alum Marwan Elkamash placed 16th overall in the event with a time of 1:47.41. Earlier in prelims, Elkamash set the Egyptian record with his mark of 1:47.40. Elkamash also set the Egyptian record in the 400 freestyle on Sunday, placing ninth with a time of 3:46.36.
Along with King in the championship final of the 100 breast on Tuesday, Miller will swim in the 50 breaststroke and IU postgrad Zane Grothe will swim in the 800 freestyle.
Prelims are scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m. ET, with the final of the women's 100 breast and semifinals of the men's 50 breast and men's 800 freestyle starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.
