BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Indiana University men's golf head coach Mike Mayer has announced that Evan Gaesser will join the program starting this fall after transferring from LaSalle University. Gaesser will be a sophomore at Indiana and has three years of eligibility remaining.
"We think that Evan can come in and fill a much-needed role for us," Coach Mayer said. "He had an outstanding freshman year at LaSalle and is finishing up a very solid summer of golf that has included winning the 90th Annual Rochester Country Club Invitational and playing very well in an elite field at the Monroe Invitational. He is a very fundamentally sound golfer with impeccable academic credentials. We think he's going to be a great fit, not just to our team, but to the university overall and we look forward to working with him."
Gaesser finished the 2016-17 season at LaSalle with a scoring average of 75.68, which ranked second on the team. As a freshman, he was one of two members of the team to play all 28 competitive rounds for the Explorers and registered a pair of Top 10 finishes. He opened the season with a tie for ninth at the Bucknell Invitational and also tied for ninth at the Explorer Match Play Championships. His best round of the year was a 70 at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, where he would go on to finish in a tie for 16th.
In high school at Kendall High School near Rochester, N.Y., he was named All-Greater Rochester Golfer of the Year and Genesee Region Golfer of the Year as a senior. He won the Section V Tournament his senior year and was named all-state on two occasions.
Gaesser also finished fourth at the NYSPHAA Championship and took home fifth at the New York State Junior Amateur.
Gaesser will be majoring in Finance in the Kelley School of Business at IU. He has a sister that played soccer at Central Michigan while his father played basketball at SUNY Geneseo.
Also joining the Hoosiers in the fall will be incoming freshmen Raj Chekuri, Ethan Shepherd and Evan Yakubov (signing day release).
