BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) has selected 15 members of the Indiana University track and field team as All-Academic Individuals.
To qualify for All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and competed any round of the NCAA Championships or finished the indoor season ranked inside the top-96 in an individual event.
Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 516 men and 752 women earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors during the 2016-17 track & field seasons.
The men's team was represented by six Hoosiers, including: Jeremy Coughler, Paul Galas, Kyle Mau, Andrew Miller, Zach Reitzug and Matt Schwartzer.
Galas earned multiple athletic honors this season. His year started last summer when he went to Vietnam to take part in the Coach for College Program, a service in which student-athletes for the United States partner with Vietnamese University students to teach academics, sports and life skills to disadvantaged children in rural Vietnam. That experience, coupled with his on the track performances led him to be named a Second-Team Arthur Ashe Scholar. He finished 14th in the high jump at the NCAA East Regional.
Coughler, an IU graduate, qualified athletically by competing in the NCAA East Regional round in the steeplechase. He finished 25th in the event. Schwartzer, also a recent graduate, finished 32nd in the 5,000m run at the NCAA East Regional.
Reitzug nabbed a 16th place finish in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA East Regional, just missing the automatic qualifying bid for a spot in the NCAA Championships. Miller finished 22nd in the hammer throw and Mau captured 37th in the 1,500m run at the East Regional.
Nine Hoosier women were named All-Academic Individuals, including: Maggie Allen, Brenna Calder, Sydney Clute, Haley Harris, Kelsey Harris, Olivia Hippensteel, Rachel Mather, Nakel McClinton and Katherine Receveur.
Receveur had a historical sophomore season. She earned All-America accolades in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, becoming the first IU female athlete to achieve such an accomplishment. She finished sixth at the Indoor NCAA Championships in the 3,000m run and ninth in the Distance Medley Relay. In the Outdoor NCAA Championships, the Louisville native crossed third in the 5,000m run.
Clute, a 2017 graduate, is one of the most decorated vaulters in the history of the Big Ten Conference. During her illustrious Indiana career, she claimed three Big Ten Championships, earned First-Team All-America honors three times, a Second-Team All-America accolade, broke the school and conference record with a clearance of 4.55m (14-11) in Tempe, AZ, was named Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Year and of the Championships this season. She finished fourth in the Outdoor NCAA Championships this year, matching her best career finish.
Both of the Harris twins ran in the NCAA East Regional. Kelsey crossed 31st in the 800m run and Haley finished 46th in the steeplechase. Allen finished 45th in the 5,000m run at the East Regional in Lexington, KY.
Both Calder and Hippensteel qualified athletically as members of the distance medley relay team at the Indoor NCAA Championships. The team claimed Second-Team All-America honors with a ninth place finish.
In the field events, McClinton notched a 17th place finish in the hammer throw and a 19th place effort in the discus throw at the NCAA East Regional. Mather competed in the pole vault in the East Regional.
