BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Five athletes with Hoosier roots will compete in the Canadian Championships over the next couple of days. The event, which began on Monday, July 3rd, will run through Sunday, July 9th in Ottawa.
Jeremy Coughler, a recent IU grad, will be the first Hoosier to compete. Coughler broke through this past season in the steeplechase, earning a trip to Lexington to compete in the NCAA East Preliminary round. He just missed a medal spot at the Big Ten Championships, claiming fourth in the event with a time of 8:47.84. The men's steeplechase will get underway at approximately 7:55 p.m. later this evening.
Ariane Raby, a 2014 graduate of Indiana University, will run in the women's 5,000m run. Raby's name is all over the school record book, including at the top of the indoor 1,000m rankings. Her name appears in three more top 10 lists individually and a handful of times by way of relay teams. Raby was also named Academic-All Big Ten twice during her Hoosier career. The women's 5k is scheduled for a 9:20 p.m. start this evening.
Kelsie Ahbe, a 2016 Olympian, will compete in the women's pole vault competition. Ahbe cleared 4.50m (14-9) in Rio to take 12th place in her Olympic-debut. She graduated from Indiana in 2014, but not before earning a pair of All-America honors in the vault. She was also an NCAA and USA Junior runner-up in the event. The women's vault is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
The 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist in the high jump will also be competing in the championships. Derek Drouin, the 2013 Bowerman Award winner, headlines the event for the Canadian Championships. Last summer the IU alum conquered track and field's greatest mountain, winning Olympic Gold at the Rio Games. The two-time Olympic medal winner cleared 2.38m (7-9.75) to secure the win about 11 months ago.
In his time at Indiana, Drouin earned All-America accolades seven times, captured five NCAA titles, won seven Big Ten Championships, owns the school record in the high jump with a mark of 2.38m (7-9.75), and holds the Gladstein Fieldhouse and Hugh Track high jump records.
The men's high jump competition will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
Joining Drouin in the high jump will be Paul Galas, who just wrapped up his junior season about two months ago. Galas is a five-time point scorer at the Big Ten Championships, including a third place finish at the Indoor Big Ten Championships earlier in the year. The academic All-Big Ten selection also earned Second-Team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar recognition for his accomplishments in the classroom and in the community.
Live results can be tracked here. A live stream of the Canadian Championships can be seen here. Coverage of the event will also be available on the IU Track and Field Twitter page. The complete recap of the event will be posted following the conclusion of the high jump on Saturday evening.
