Trio of Hoosiers Notch Top Four Finishes in Ottawa

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Five athletes with Hoosier roots competed in the Canadian Track and Field Championships over the last handful of days. The championships were hosted at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, Canada.
Kelsie Ahbe, a 2016 Olympic participant, finished third in the pole vault. She started the competition by passing on the first six heights before entering at 4.25m. Ahbe missed her opening attempt before clearing on her second jump. The All-American went on to clear 4.35m on her first attempt before clearing 4.45m on her second attempt. She passed on 4.50m before failing to clear 4.55m. Her mark of 4.45m (14-7.25) earned her bronze.
Evan Esselink finished fourth in the senior 5,000m run. The 2015 graduate was seventh at the one kilometer split, and remained in the seventh spot through 3k. He made his move in the final 800m, turning in his two quickest laps of the race. He entered the bell lap in sixth place on the strength of a 1:07.4 lap. His final lap of 1:00.3 propelled him into fourth place.
Senior-to-be Paul Galas finished fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.10m (6-10.75). Galas passed on the first three heights before entering the competition at 2.00m. He quickly cleared 2.00m and 2.05m on his first jumps at each height. His first miss came at 2.10m, but he recovered to clear the height on his second try. He did not get over the bar at 2.15m. The Academic All-Big Ten selection earned a fourth place finish.
In his first race following his senior campaign, Jeremy Coughler crossed 10th in the 3,000m steeplechase. The Big Ten point-scorer finished with a time of 9:15.27.
Ariane Raby, a 2014 IU graduate, finished 18th in the women's 5,000m run. The two-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient crossed the line with a time of 17:37.08.
Galas is also slated to compete in the French Games. The event will consist of approximately 80 countries with French history. The games will take place in the Ivory Coast from July 18-31.
