Sophomore Victoria Brisack recently participated in the 11th Annual Liberty Christian Church Sports Camp, hosted by DistinXion, a non-profit organization founded by Luke Zeller and the Zeller family as a way to provide elite basketball and cheerleading training, while also building family relationships through character training.
Brisack spoke to kids about being a student-athlete at IU and put on a volleyball skills clinic. Below is her account of the experience.
A couple weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to speak at a local, non-profit organization that runs an all sports camp for kids. Every week, a different sport is featured for the kids to try, and while all children are welcome, the majority fall under the category of free or reduced lunch at school.
In addition to being completely free for all who attend, every new camper gets to pick out a brand new pair of shoes and socks and a journal. The camp's director began the shoe program when he noticed that many of the kids were coming into camp with horribly worn down shoes that actually kept them from being able to play the sports.
The director told me a very heart-warming story while I was there about a little girl who came to camp and got to pick out a brand new pair of shoes. Upon completion of that day's camp, she came back up to him, shoes in hand, and tried to give the shoes back. As he told her they were hers to keep, the little girl started crying and thanking him over and over again. She told him that she had never had a new pair of shoes before.

The Wednesday that I went, it was volleyball night. I began by speaking to the kids, telling them a little bit about myself, where I was from, how I got started with volleyball, what it was like to be a student-athlete at IU, etc. Then, the next two hours were all mine to teach the kids how to play my favorite sport. We did stations to divide up age groups and then all joined in at the very end to play one massive game of boys vs girls.
Overall, I had an absolute blast and made many new friends. The kids were so close with one another and so full of life. Their positivity and energy was infectious, and the two hours were over much too fast. I cannot wait to go back!
