Urbanek steers comeback with corner hit in closing minutes
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's 2017 field hockey season has arrived at its unofficial beginning with the completion of the annual Cream & Crimson scrimmage, pitting Hoosiers against Hoosiers in the first fully live game simulation of the preseason. Although the team split was interchangeable based on situation, the Crimson team emerged victorious, 3-2, thanks to a relentless finishing effort from senior Abby Urbanek.
Trailing by one score in the closing stages of the regulation period, Urbanek flipped the script in the final 15 minutes to give her side the comeback win. Claire Woods provided the entry assist to the senior forward, who cracked her shot into the boards as she turned to face the defense.
In the 69th minute of regulation, the Crimson team called Urbanek's number yet again on an attack penalty corner. Taylor Swope received the insert and deceptively pushed the ball to Urbanek, rather than setting up their main hitter. Urbanek's aim was true, and the goal slipped through the defense and just wide of a diving goalkeeper effort.
Crimson's late comeback was even sweeter considering that they had the lead after the first half. Woods jumped a transition play in their offensive third, forcing a quick counterattack. The junior, who missed all of the 2016 season to injury, made an enthusiastic return with a steal and a smooth insert to Maddie Latino. And after drawing in the defense, Latino slid an assist to freshman forward Bente Buwalda, who hammered the goal from close range.
The remainder of the half was a formidable display from both defenses, including standout performances by the goalkeeping trio. Senior Katie Johnson stopped nine shots over the 70 minutes of regulation. Indiana's freshman tandem, Sachi Ananias and Shelby Querry, combined for nine saves as well.
The Cream team didn't let that 1-0 lead linger too deeply into the second half. Kelsey Geise rocketed an entry pass, looking for a friendly stick, which deflected off of the defense and into the net. Two minutes later, Ciara Girouard collected a rebound from the initial save and lifted the goal high over the second block attempt.
Following the regulation period, the sides tested their extra time capabilities with an overtime scenario. Not long after dropping to seven-on-seven, Swope called a similar attack corner play to Urbanek's game-winner. This time, however, Giese was on the receiving in and she finished the chance with a thunderous strike.
In the ensuing penalty shootout simulation, Crimson prevailed yet again with a 5-2 advantage. Latino, Girouard, Giese, Woods, and Elle Hempt sunk their chances for Crimson; Urbanek and Sheridan Weiss converted their shootout attempts, but Crimson keeper Sachi Ananias stopped two shots to put the contest out of reach.
The Hoosiers return to the turf at the IU Field Hockey Complex at noon on Friday, August 18 for a scrimmage against Saint Louis University. On Saturday, August 19, Indiana will wrap up their preseason schedule with another home scrimmage against Ball State at 1:00 p.m. ET.
