BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With 11 Hoosiers part of National Football League organizations, Indiana is well represented in the professional ranks. Each week throughout the year, IUHoosiers.com will provide updates on these former IU standouts.
In a showdown between former Hoosier greats, Cody Latimer and the Denver Broncos got the best of Jordan Howard and the Chicago Bears, by a score of 24-17. Howard enters his second season in the NFL. In his rookie season he established himself as a Pro Bowl caliber running back and finished second in the league in rushing yards with 1,313 yards and six touchdowns.
Latimer shined for the Broncos, hauling in all seven of his targets for 54 yards. He was by far the most targeted Bronco, caught the most passes and totaled the most yardage. Howard had three carries on the evening.
Tevin Coleman and the Atlanta Falcons fell to the Miami Dolphins via a late rally by the home team. Coleman, who had one carry in the contest, will be in his third year in the league and is coming off of a breakout sophomore season. The former All-American scored 11 touchdowns on nearly 1,000 yards from scrimmage in the regular season for the NFC Champion Falcons. Coleman also found the end zone in all three playoff games, including the Super Bowl last season.
Against the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Redskin quarterback Nate Sudfeld completed 5-of-12 passes for a team-high 68 yards. Sudfeld was the third quarterback used by the Redskins, seeing his first action at the beginning of the third quarter. His best throw came in the fourth quarter when he connected on a 31-yard catch and run with Robert Davis.
Shane Wynn helped aid the Jacksonville Jaguars in defeating the New England Patriots on Thursday evening, by a score of 31-24. Wynn nabbed one of his three targets for a 17-yard gain, a play that kept Jacksonville's drive alive. He caught a short pass from Chad Henne on third down and turned it into a 17-yard scamper and a first down.
Two Hoosiers made their debut for the Los Angeles Chargers. Dan Feeney saw heavy minutes for the Chargers. He showed off his versatility by playing at both guard spots in the first half and playing center in the third quarter. The two-time All-American also recorded a tackle on an interception. Mitchell Paige, also a member of the Chargers, hauled in his lone target for four yards. Paige also returned one punt for ten yards.
In a contest with the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals, Darius Latham, a second-year pro, registered three solo tackles in the loss for Oakland. Latham is coming off his solid rookie campaign in which he played in 15 games including the playoffs, securing 18 total tackles and a pass defended.
The Green Bay Packers took down the Philadelphia Eagles by score of 24-9 last Thursday. Jason Spriggs played 28 snaps for the Packers in the victory. Roger Saffold started at right tackle for the Los Angeles Rams in their 13-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. The starting group played just eight snaps but were effective, scoring a touchdown after a botched punt return set the Rams up with a short field.
Devine Redding saw action for the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers on Friday evening. Redding was targeted one on a pass and also tallied a special teams tackle.
