IUWS Opens Season with 3-1 Victory Against Cal Poly

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer opened the 2017 campaign Friday night with a 3-1 victory against Cal Poly at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Sophomore Meghan Scott led the way with her first career goal, as well as an assist. Junior Maya Piper and redshirt junior Annelie Leitner also found the back of the net for Indiana, who is playing host in the Hoosier Challenge Cup this weekend.
The victory marked the first season-opening win for the Hoosiers since the 2014 campaign.
"Very pleased with the performance," said head coach Amy Berbary. "I think it's a great starting block and tonight will breed confidence in some of the players that what we've been working so hard on was put into place and worked."
Scott, who earlier this week was named to the Big Ten Preseason Honors List, put the Hoosiers on the board right before half as she found Piper for a header in the box in the 41st minute. After Piper gained possession of the ball 35 yards out, she sent the ball back to sophomore Allison Jorden, who found Scott on a run down the right flank. Scott then crossed the ball into Piper, waiting at the top of the six-yard box to head it in.
"We were really dangerous in the first half and to get that one in the last five minutes I think really gave us that boost," said Berbary.
The Hoosiers outshot Cal Poly, 21-8, including a 11-4 advantage at the break.
Indiana came out hot to start the second half, earning a trio of corners to pressure the Cal Poly defense. Junior Caroline Dreher nearly doubled the Hoosier lead as she ricocheted a shot off the crossbar in the 56th minute.
Three minutes later, senior Kayla Smith drew a foul 25 yards out, setting up a Hoosier free kick. Scott curled the ball around the Cal Poly defender wall into the top left corner of the net to give Indiana a 2-0 advantage.
"I knew where I wanted to place it and I saw the top left corner open, so that's what I went for," said Scott. "All preseason we've been putting in a lot of hard work – everyone on the field. Everybody just stepped up."
The final Hoosier score came in the 81st minute as Leitner converted a penalty kick. The kick was awarded after sophomore Macy Miller was tackled a couple steps inside the 18-yard box.
Cal Poly ended the shutout a few minutes later as the Mustangs also drew a penalty kick, which was converted by Megan Abutin.
IU freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel registered three saves in her debut. One of the biggest tests for the Novi, Mich. native came just 19 seconds in as Cal Poly's Jessica Johnson sent in an on-target look 10 yards out. Kopel knocked the ball away with her left foot to get out of danger.
The Hoosiers are back in action Sunday as they play host to No. 13 Clemson at 1:30 p.m. Admission to all home games is free of charge.
"It's an incredible opportunity on Sunday," said Berbary. "That's the way we're going to look at. You don't get many of these opportunities to be able to play a group that went to the Sweet Sixteen last year and starts the season as the No. 13 team in the country."
