BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Hoosiers football is back. The 2017 campaign kicked off with the opening day of preseason camp on a picture-perfect Wednesday. Indiana took to the field just 29 days before the regular season begins with a Big Ten clash against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
This season will mark the first official season for head coach Tom Allen. Day one reflected much of what Coach Allen believes will help this year's team breakthrough.
"I think that the kids responded really well," Allen said. "I loved the energy, I loved the attitude and I loved the way the offense finished at the end. The defense did some great things today. That is what you want, a little back and forth between the team. It was a good first day with a lot of positives."
Last season the newly appointed defensive coordinator had one task: turn the Hoosiers defense into a top 25 unit. Through hard work, preparation and an abundance of energy the defensive side of the ball took huge strides in that direction. The mantra of Coach Allen fueled the team to a dramatic turnaround.
"To me it is about competing," Allen state. "We had a few scuffles today, which, as I told them, I am okay with as long as they leave it on the field. If you are playing at a high level, competing and fighting against the same guys every play, it is going to happen. I loved the competitive spirit today."
Coach Allen was thrilled with what he saw on day one. The team competed in every drill, every rep. The pads stayed in the locker room for the first day of camp, but the practice still carried a high level of intensity. Every offensive skill player finished a catch or run at least 20 yards down the field, while all 11 defensive players finished each play by tagging the ball carrier. Each play emphasized closing the deal, which in turn, will lead to the Hoosiers finishing tight games.
"All of camp will be about putting our guys in stressful situations, adding as much stress as I can as a coach and seeing how they respond," Allen said.
Practice ended with a first-unit showdown. The first team offense took to the field, the ball spotted in the score zone, just inside the 15-yard line.
The first-string defense dug in, not wanting to yield a score. Coach Allen announced to the team that this drive would be the last of the day, winner takes all. A pass breakup thwarted the offense's initial end zone shot, before the offense came through with a touchdown toss on the second play of the drive.
Indiana will be back on the practice field tomorrow afternoon with another helmets only practice. On Friday and Saturday, the team will wear shells before the first full-padded practice of the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosiers will host the fourth Thursday night game in Memorial Stadium history: Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 3, 2009 (W, 19-13); Towson on Sept. 2, 2010 (W, 51-17) and Indiana State on Aug. 29, 2013 (W, 73-35). IU jumpstarted its 2016 Foster Farms Bowl season with a Thursday evening 34-13 victory at Florida International on Sept. 1.
Tickets for Indiana's six home games are available by clicking here, by phone at 1-866-IUSPORTS or in person at the Assembly Hall Ticket Office. In addition to the Buckeyes, the Hoosiers will welcome Florida International (Sept. 16), Georgia Southern (Sept. 23), Michigan (Oct. 14), Wisconsin (Nov. 4) and Rutgers (Nov. 18).
