BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer dropped a close 1-0 battle to No. 13 Clemson on Sunday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium in the finale of the Hoosier Challenge Cup. The Hoosiers outshot the Tigers, 6-5, including a 3-1 advantage in the second half.
"They ran us pretty hard in that first half and I thought we regrouped at halftime," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We kept our heads and we just tried to contain them. They're a good team. They got in, they had one chance and they put the ball away."
Indiana (1-1) showed control early, earning a pair of corner kicks in the first 16 minutes. However, the Hoosiers couldn't cash in as the first IU shot of the game came on a high ball from junior Abby Allen.
The first threat for either team came on a Clemson (2-0) shot by Mackenzie Smith in the 18th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel made the stop for her lone save of the day.
A few minutes later, IU redshirt junior Mykayla Brown put up back-to-back shots, including an on-target look that Tiger goalkeeper Melanie Stiles was able to get her gloves on.
The stalemate ended in the 32nd minute when Clemson's Courtney Jones sent a cross in to Kimber Haley. After a bit of a shuffle inside the box, Jenna Polonsky found the back of the net.
Indiana pushed for the equalizer in the third, earning three more corner kicks and a pair of close range free kicks. The Hoosiers' best look at a score came in the 73rd minute as a foul was called on Clemson, giving IU a free kick five yards from the corner flag. The ball was sent in across the box, finding junior Maya Piper. The Midland, Mich. heading ball in on goal, but Smith was there again to make the stop.
The Hoosiers return to action on Thursday evening as they host Louisville at 7:30 p.m. Admission to all home games is free of charge.
"Louisville scored late on us last year and we ended the game on a 1-1 draw," said Berbary. "But it's a new year, two new teams. We'll just look to build on this performance. It's our home field so we just need to make sure we're up for that game and we recover pretty quickly."
