ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced Monday their selections for their field hockey preseason honors list, an annual anticipation of the players to watch for the upcoming fall season. Indiana senior defender Elle Hempt, senior forward Maddie Latino, and sophomore midfielder Ciara Girouard were among the 27 Big Ten players to receive recognition.
The preseason honors list is selected every preseason by the Big Ten's head coaches. This year's group includes nine reigning All-Big Ten selections and 11 Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Hempt and Latino are returning two-time Academic All-Big Ten members, and Hempt is one of four honorees with a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar award.
Returning to Bloomington for her final collegiate season and second as Indiana's captain, Hempt delivered a rock solid season in her return to the backfield last year. Hempt transferred to Indiana for the start of the 2015 season, which she missed to injury, but returned the next season to start all 20 games. Hempt and the defense paced the conference in team saves per game (7.11) and save percentage (.767) last season while also earning three shutouts. The Carlisle, Pennsylvania native entered the Hoosiers' offensive schemes by the end of the season, serving an assist in their regular season Big Ten finale and scoring her first career goal against Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament.
Latino is the Hoosiers' leading scorer (14 career goals, 16 assists) among all current players, and she brings that knack for creativity into her final year with a talented and deep forward line. Last year she led the Hoosiers with eight assists, playing a vital role in Indiana's dangerous attack penalty corner unit. Latino actually led the Hoosiers in scoring as a sophomore (10 goals in 2015), and with the departure of first team All-American Kate Barber, Indiana will turn to Latino as a focal point for the attack. Friday's season opener in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky will be her 55th career appearance for Indiana.
As one of the many surprises from head coach Amanda Janney's first full recruiting class at Indiana, Girouard is poised for a breakout season in 2017. Although Girouard earned a starting spot on the forward line in all 20 games of her freshman year, the sophomore will begin this season in the attacking midfield where Barber claimed All-American status last year. Girouard netted four goals (3rd – team) in her debut campaign, opening her account with a double at Central Michigan.
All nine Big Ten field hockey teams will begin their seasons this weekend, but Indiana is one of four squads getting underway on Friday afternoon. The Hoosiers travel across the Ohio River to open the year with their annual rivalry game against Louisville on August 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET, which will stream live on the ACC Digital Network. The next day, Indiana will face the reigning NCAA Champion Delaware Blue Hens in Louisville on August 26 at 1:00 p.m. ET, a rematch of a thrilling nine-goal game last season.
