Junior Jessica Admire is from Franklin, Ind., and this summer did an internship at her local orthodontist office. Below she writes about the experience. Following undergrad at Indiana Admire's goal is graduating dental school and moving on to specialize in orthodontics.
For the month of May, I had the wonderful opportunity of interning at the orthodontic office of Daniel S. Martin, located in my hometown of Franklin, IN. The dental and orthodontic world's first sparked my interest when I was a patient at Dr. Martin's office. I loved the upbeat atmosphere, the colorful scrubs, the attentive staff, and the basis of the whole practice – TEETH! Carrying into today, I am now a Human Biology major on a pre-dental track. And, now that I'm older, I appreciate the technical side of orthodontics and professionalism that accompanies it. I caught a glimpse of this during my time there, shadowing extraordinarily hardworking and admirable members of the office. Their meticulousness matches their zest throughout the course of the workday.
Working from about 7:40 AM to 5:00 PM (with a delicious lunchbreak during which the ladies and I would grab a bite from our favorite spots around town), I learned the ropes of the office routine. Hygiene and sterilization within an orthodontic establishment is key; the health of the patient is a priority! I would help disinfect and scrub the workspace, including counters, mirrors, floors, etc. In between each appointment, the stations are scrubbed and the instruments are sterilized at extremely high temperatures. The day is organized via appointment type and duration, initial bonding and debands (start/removal of braces) being examples of longer appointments.
I had the chance of learning how to untie and tie a patient's wires in, as well as take impressions and later 'pour them up'. Surprisingly enough, the alginate and plaster used for impressions closely resembles the materials I worked with in several of my art classes here at Indiana University. Knowing that there are areas in which I can apply my artistic interests only enhanced my intrigue with a dental career. Even more importantly, the patience of the orthodontic assistants and Dr. Martin himself encouraged me to broaden my understanding of the anatomical structure of the mouth.
Dr. Martin provided great explanations for why the wires, bands, retainers, and other tools incorporated lead to the beautiful smiles that patients enjoy for the rest of their lives! I absolutely adored working there and will definitely use my time there as motivation for achieving my ultimate occupational dream of graduating dental school and moving on to specialize in orthodontics.
